NeoCons & The Interminable Illusion of Indignation

The past month has been saturated with debate and recriminations about the MoveOn.org ad which asked whether General Petraus should, perhaps, be called General Betray Us. Republicans – in the congress and on the airwaves – have seized upon this ad as proof that Democrats hate the troops. They’ve feverishly beat this “story” like Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s snuff film. The President called it “disgusting.”

As I sit here trying to enjoy my lunch, the big screens are playing Fox “News” which is currently asking, in conspiratorial tones, why Columbia University is allowing the President of Iran to speak on its campus. Fox’s “research” into this matter involved a 5-minute discussion with a sophomore at the school, whom I can only guess was there to decry, on behalf of the Young Republicans Club, this travesty of educational terrorism. They pointed out, in bullet points, that Columbia has previously entertained other offensive guests, including “a former Nazi.” On the surface, with the talking heads guiding you through the proper emotional response, it would appear that Columbia University is in cahoots with the lunatic leader of Iran, probably giving him blueprints for nuclear weapons.

Or, could it be that Columbia University, widely considered to be one of the great universities in our country, (and attended by the selfsame young Republican who presumably chose it for that reason), believes that there is something to be learned from important international figures, whether they are great citizens or hideous villains. Either way, the story serves their purposes much more meaningfully than, for example, the fact that George Bush allowed the Iranian president into the United States in the first place.

None of it means anything. Their goal is simply to stir up righteous, irrelevant indignation about meaningless crap, especially when it can be used to imply that liberals are the cause of something insufferable. At this very moment, Fox is hosting a round table discussion with four women about the MoveOn ad. They can’t get enough of it. They are smiling from ear to ear with vindication, now that the Senate has voted to condemn the ad. This is surely a sign of victory. They’ve managed to convince enough people that a pun in a newspaper advertisement is more worthy of congressional action than the interminable war that General “LickMySmellyTaint” Betray Us is now perpetuating on behalf of the president now that he’s been elevated to the status of Untouchable Military God Who Knows Better Than Everyone On Earth How To Achieve Victory And Triumph Over The Evildoers. Disagreement of any kind with General “TeabagsHisOwnMother” Pussy-Traus clearly indicates a profound hatred of all military personnel and a total lack of gratitude for their service all the way back to the civil war, through World War II, right up to the present day. The only time it was ever, ever, ever appropriate to attack generals was when Bill Clinton was president and when they disagreed with President Bush.

Overblown indignation is their new smart bomb. When things are looking down, when the facts on the ground are contributing to the impression that you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about, when you’ve redefined failure, just throw some dirt in their eyes and get everyone pissed off about those crazy liberals. This is all they have left. Shrill, ridiculous, useless attempts to divert attention away from this criminally incompetent administration and the congressional hacks that are following them off the cliff like sheep (or with their dicks stuck in sheep).

*Witness Michelle Malkin spewing bile about Sally Field’s Emmy speech, censored by Fox, in which she said “If mother’s ruled the world there would be no goddamned wars in the first place.” Malkin argues that “motherhood should bring a ferocity, and dare I say, make us more violent,” demonstrating that she lacks the intellectual capacity to understand Ms. Field’s profound point (and making me despair for her children).

*Witness Bill O’Reilly attacking Tim Robbins for saying that, among other things “we’ve killed 400,000 of their civilians.” O’Reilly, of course, seizes upon this literally, and devotes an entire segment (with Michelle Malkin) to demonizing Robbins’ anti-American, anti-military, “horrible” statements, ignoring what all thinking people know was intended – namely, that our presence there, our occupation of their country, our botched attempt at spreading Democracy, has led to many horrible consequences, including the death of hundreds of thousands of civilians. Ironically, O’Reilly then uses figures he found on a “far left” site to argue that the number is much lower. Bear in mind, “far left” is uttered with the kind of disgust Andrea Makris must have felt when Bill (allegedly) described his cock to her.

*Witness the entire section devoted to “Sex Teacher Shockers!” on the Hannity & Colmes website. I’m serious – right under the “Race For The White House” section, which contains 4 videos, is a “Sex Teacher Shockers!” section, featuring 5 videos! These stories are devoted to riling indignation about female teachers who have sex with their students and get sentences that are insufferably lenient. I can only conclude that the problem of female teachers having consensual sex with their students is more critical to our national interest than the race for the white house.

*Witness Fox & Friends melodramatically responding to Kathy Griffin’s Emmy acceptance speech. You need to check out the YouTube video on this one. It’s an instant classic in my book, not only for the mounds of indignation expressed by the deeply wounded host, but because they consult a very funny, obviously homosexual priest, live from the Vatican, who comments on Kathy’s sad life, while failing to comment on the fact that he’s decided to cloister himself with other sexually repressed men rather than suffer the shame of sucking dick through his thick, sibilant lips. (Also, watch the hostess nod in vigorous agreement about how offensive this was – and how excited she gets when the priest is introduced!)

And those are just the examples I’ve mined from the Fox News website today. It’s everywhere. The entire conservative movement has resorted to this pathetic, desperate attempt to salvage what little is left of their dignity. They’ve got nothing left. They failed miserably, in every conceivable way. But these people don’t accept defeat. Surrender is not an option. They’ve become intellectual suicide bombers, loading their belts with bullshit and detonating giant shit bombs in the marketplace and doing more harm to America than any terrorist has ever managed.
